The Pilot Proficiency Program

Each of the ratings below entails a specified accumulation of experience and mastery of a certain set of skills which may not mean much to a person new to the sport. The broader meanings are given instead.

Hang One (beginner) -the pilot can control the glider for short flights without continuous direction from an instructor.

Hang Two (novice) -the pilot can perform extended high altitude flight under the guidance of more experienced pilots.

Hang Three (intermediate) -the pilot has the experience, judgment and skill to fly without supervision.

Hang Four (advanced); Hang Five (master) -graduated proficiency Steps above the intermediate level. Some flying sites require these higher ratings.

Experienced pilots who are designated to provide guidance to novice pilots are known as "Observers".
